Jakarta's air quality ranks third worst in the world on Thursday morning

Jakarta’s air quality on Thursday morning was ranked the third worst in the world, according to data from the IQAir air quality monitoring site at 06.00 WIB.

The metropolitan city’s air quality index (AQI) stood at 162, placing it in the unhealthy category. The public is advised to wear masks when engaging in outdoor activities.

The city with the worst air quality in the world is Kinshasa (Congo) with an AQI of 208, followed by Kuching (Malaysia) in second place with an AQI of 199.

Meanwhile, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is implementing three main strategies to improve air quality in the capital.

The second strategy targets the operation of 10,000 Transjakarta electric buses by 2030, given that the transportation sector currently contributes 50 percent of exhaust emissions in Jakarta.

DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has invited all residents to make use of the public transport services provided by the provincial government. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has even issued regulations regarding the provision of free public transport services for 15 groups of citizens.

The third strategy is to optimise the use of the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) waste processing facility in Rorotan, North Jakarta.
