Jakarta's 60-Minute Energy-Saving Drive Cuts Carbon Emissions by 60 Tonnes CO2e
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government recorded a reduction in carbon emissions of 60.14 tonnes of CO2e through an Energy Saving and Emission Reduction Action held for 60 minutes on Saturday (13/6). The activity, which took place from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. Western Indonesia Time, was part of the 2026 World Environment Day commemoration and an effort to promote climate change control in the capital.
Based on data from PLN’s Jakarta Raya Main Distribution Unit (PLN Disjaya), the blackout action successfully saved 75.18 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity consumption and reduced electricity usage costs by up to Rp108.69 million.
Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, stated that the one-hour blackout was not merely a ceremonial activity, but an effort to build a culture of energy conservation that yields real environmental impact. “The 60-minute blackout is not just a symbol. It serves as a reminder that simple steps taken together can have a real impact on the environment. From small habits, we can create big changes for a healthier and more sustainable Jakarta,” Dudi said in a statement on Sunday (14/6).
Dudi explained that the activity is part of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government’s commitment to supporting low-carbon development and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its implementation refers to Governor’s Instruction Number 14 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Blackouts for Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction, which is carried out periodically.
He assessed that the achievement of reducing emissions by more than 60 tonnes of CO2e shows that behavioural change in energy use can produce measurable impacts if carried out consistently and involves broad public participation. “This success was born from the collaboration of various parties, from building managers, business actors, communities, to residents who turned off lights and unused electronic devices during the action,” he said.
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, Dudi continued, will keep encouraging energy-saving behaviour to become a daily habit for residents. Simple steps such as turning off unused electronic devices and using electricity wisely are considered important contributions to improving the quality of the urban environment. “When millions of residents consistently take the same small steps, the impact on Jakarta’s environmental quality will be enormous. Protecting the earth and providing cleaner air is not just the government’s task, but a collective movement of the entire community,” he explained.
During the implementation, the blackout was carried out at a number of strategic icons and areas in Jakarta, including the National Monument, the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the Welcome Monument at the Bundaran HI, the Pemuda Statue, the General Sudirman Statue, and the DKI Jakarta City Hall area. The action serves as one of the provincial government’s instruments to reduce energy consumption while strengthening public awareness of the importance of carbon emission reduction amidst the increasingly real challenges of climate change.
