Jakarta's 499th Anniversary: Rano Karno Sheds Tears Envisioning a More Humane City

Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Rano Karno appeared to shed tears while delivering a speech at the DKI Jakarta Provincial House of Representatives Plenary Session commemorating the 499th Anniversary of the City of Jakarta. In front of DKI Jakarta House of Representatives members and former DKI Governors present in the Plenary Meeting Room, Rano was visibly emotional when discussing Jakarta entering its 5th century in 2027. According to him, Jakarta has learned to endure amidst change and rise from various challenges. “The momentum towards Jakarta’s 5th century must be a point for the entire city to prepare for its future more earnestly,” said Rano on Monday (22/6). He stated that the government is striving for a future Jakarta that is more advanced, more competitive, but also more sustainable. “Also a future that is more humane, a future that provides a sense of security, opportunities for justice, and hope for all its citizens,” he said. The former Governor of Banten said his administration aims to make Jakarta a cultured global city and a centre of growth, innovation, and civilisation. “We want to present a Jakarta that is competitive without losing its sense of humanity, an inclusive Jakarta without discriminating based on background, a Jakarta that continues to move forward without leaving a single citizen behind,” he concluded.
