Jakarta's 499th Anniversary Peak Celebrations to Be Held at Bundaran HI This Weekend

The Jakarta provincial government will hold the peak celebration of the city’s 499th anniversary at the Bundaran HI roundabout in Central Jakarta this weekend, on Saturday (27/6) and Sunday (28/6).

According to Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo, the series of anniversary events began on 21 June and will continue until the end of this week.

“The Jakarta anniversary series, which started on the 21st and 22nd, will continue with an event at Bundaran HI on the 27th and also an event on the 28th,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday (23/6), as quoted by Antara.

Pramono explained that a number of activities have been prepared to enliven the anniversary. However, he stated that this year’s celebrations will not be excessive. He believes the most important thing is to bring joy to the citizens of Jakarta without ignoring the developing global situation.

“But the essence of my message is to create public joy, but not excessively. Because for me, in the current geopolitical conditions, joy is important but should not be over the top,” he said.

Nevertheless, Pramono has not yet detailed what activities will be held in the area on Saturday.

The provincial government has already held a number of events to welcome Jakarta’s 499th anniversary on Monday (22/6), including providing free access to tourist destinations and public transport, as well as inaugurating connectivity in the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) area.

This year’s 499th anniversary celebration also marks the lead-up to the commemoration of Jakarta’s 500th year, or five centuries, which will be observed in 2027.
