Jakartans have enough food supply

JAKARTA: The city administration has guaranteed that there will be enough food for the Ramadhan fasting month and Idul Fitri holiday.

Head of the City Office for Economic Affairs, Sukri Bey, said on Tuesday that the basic commodities supplies, such as rice, sugar and cooking oil, would last more than two months.

Cipinang wholesale market has 58,000 tons of rice and the Jakarta provincial logistics agency has 164,125 tons this month. Jakartans' daily demand is an average 3,000 tons, or about 90,000 tons a month.

The capital has 57,439 tons of sugar against Jakartans' monthly need of around 9,000 tons, while it has 65,000 tons of cooking oil against a monthly need of 15,000 tons.

"The trend of price hike to 20 percent ahead of Idul Fitri is because of the high demand by the consumers," Sukri said. -- JP
