Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Utara City Government has conducted a declaration as a city that implements 100% waste sorting at source. “Waste sorting is not merely a matter of cleanliness but part of environmental health,” said Deputy Mayor of Jakarta Utara, Fredy Setiawan, in his statement in Jakarta on Sunday. Kelurahan Rorotan in Kecamatan Cilincing has become a role model area that applies 100% waste sorting at source. He stated that sorting waste at source can also reduce the burden on final disposal sites (TPA) for waste, build a circular economy, and form the character of orderly and responsible urban communities. The efforts undertaken include massive education for residents, involvement of all regional elements from lurah, camat, RT/RW, PKK, environmental cadres to community leaders. Then, strengthening supporting facilities, as well as collaboration with schools, places of worship, business actors, and communities. “Today’s declaration is not the end but the beginning of a great effort to build a culture of sorting waste in households, RT/RW environments, schools, markets, offices, and public spaces,” said Fredy. Meanwhile, the Head of the Environmental Office (Kasudin LH) Edy Mulyanto explained that the waste sorting at source programme has been running in seven kelurahan out of a total of 31 kelurahan in Jakarta Utara. Besides Kelurahan Rorotan, the other six pilot areas are Kelurahan Penjaringan, Pademangan Timur, Sunter Agung, Tugu Utara, Pegangsaan Dua, and Semper Timur,” he said.
