Jakarta Transport Ranked 17th Globally, Governor Invites Ministers and Police Chief to Ride Transjakarta

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated that the capital’s transport sector is now ranked 17th in the world. Because of this, Pramono invited the National Police Chief and cabinet ministers to also use public transport, especially Transjakarta. He delivered these remarks during a speech at the signing of a Joint Decree on the Pilot Programme for Integrated Service Provision for Women and Children at Grha Ali Sadikin, Jakarta City Hall, on Thursday. “Ladies and Gentlemen Ministers, Police Chief, Head of LPSK, Jakarta is now the number 71 city out of 156 global cities. And Jakarta is the second safest city in ASEAN after Singapore. Jakarta’s transport is now number 17 in the world,” Pramono said. Pramono stated that these achievements are one reason Jakarta continues to improve itself towards becoming a global city. According to Pramono, the Jakarta provincial government is currently continuing to develop integrated public transport services. He therefore did not hesitate to invite National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and several attending ministers to use public transport in Jakarta. Ministers and agency heads present included Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas, Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid, Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Arifah Fauzi, Deputy Minister Veronika Tan, and LPSK Chairman Achmadi. “So on this occasion, Police Chief and fellow Ministers, we would like to invite all of you who have never tried the Transjakarta or Transjabodetabek services to do so. It is not inferior to major countries anywhere,” he said. Pramono explained that transport connectivity in Jakarta has now reached over 90 per cent. He also emphasised the commitment to protecting women and children, especially on public transport. “That is why it is our determination, including providing protection for women and children. We are currently developing all transport in Jakarta, whose connectivity has reached 93 per cent, but continuous utilisation is only almost 28 per cent. So we want to increase it to above 30 per cent,” he stated. Pramono also touched on the development of Transjabodetabek services, which are increasingly reaching Jakarta’s buffer zones. According to him, affordable fares are one of the attractions of this public transport. “Currently there are already 14 Transjabodetabek routes. From Bogor to Blok M it is only Rp 3,500. From Blok M to Soekarno-Hatta is also only Rp 3,500, and to Blok M-PIK 2 is also Rp 3,500, and so on,” he said. The senior PDIP politician believes the growing network and connectivity are increasing public transport users in Jakarta. Nonetheless, the provincial government is also working to ensure all transport services are friendly towards women, children, and people with disabilities. “But we underline that all those facilities must be child-friendly, women-friendly, and disability-friendly,” he added. On the same occasion, Pramono also revealed that the Jakarta provincial government has made public transport services free for 15 community groups, including civil servants and elderly residents.
