Jakarta, Indonesia — The Jakarta Transport Authority (Dishub) has urged all organisers of large-scale events to coordinate with the department from the planning stage of their activities.

This step is considered important to ensure that traffic management and parking requirements can be prepared thoroughly, thereby preventing congestion that disrupts public mobility.

The appeal was issued following severe traffic congestion on Jalan HR Rasuna Said in South Jakarta during a music performance estimated to have been attended by approximately 10,000 people on Sunday evening, 31 May.

According to the statement, the provincial government fundamentally supports various community activities and economic activities taking place in Jakarta. However, activities with the potential to attract large crowds need to be anticipated collectively.

“We offer our apologies to the public affected by traffic congestion and disruptions in the HR Rasuna Said area,” said Budi in his statement on Monday, 1 June 2024.

Budi explained that the event had in fact obtained a gathering permit from the police. However, the Jakarta Transport Authority did not receive coordination from the organisers regarding traffic management and parking requirements needed to anticipate the surge in visitors.

“With proper coordination, Dishub can prepare parking areas, deploy personnel, conduct traffic management and engineering measures, and anticipate potential vehicle congestion around the event location. Dishub also recommends the use of public transport to the venue,” said Budi.

According to Budi, the use of public transport is also one solution to reduce the number of private vehicles arriving at the event location. In this way, the traffic burden on surrounding road sections can be minimised.

Dishub believes that good coordination between organisers, local government, and relevant authorities can help prepare additional parking areas, vehicle flow management, and traffic engineering schemes if necessary.

“Therefore, we also urge all event organisers to coordinate with Dishub from the outset so that anticipatory measures can be prepared optimally and public mobility remains protected,” he said.
