Jakarta Transport Agency to Build Pelican Crossing at Collapsed Tendean Footbridge Site

The Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub) will build a pelican crossing as a temporary solution at the site of the Tendean pedestrian bridge (JPO) which collapsed after being struck by a truck. The crossing facility is targeted for completion within one to two weeks whilst awaiting the construction of a new footbridge.

Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency Budi Awaludin said the decision was taken based on the results of a cross-agency meeting. According to him, the presence of a crossing facility at the location is indeed very much needed by the public.

“So, based on the results of yesterday’s meeting, the footbridge will indeed be built. And considering that building it will still take quite a long time, therefore, given the road conditions there, we will create the pelican crossing,” Budi said in the Kebon Sirih area, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (22/7/2026).

Budi explained that the study for the pelican crossing construction has been completed. Currently, Dishub is just waiting for the Bina Marga Agency to dismantle the median garden and part of the pavement so that the installation of the facility can be carried out immediately.

“Well, we have completed the study. So we are waiting for Bina Marga to open up the garden and also the pavement in the middle for us to build the pelican crossing. Once they have opened it up, we will immediately carry out the construction,” he stated.

According to Budi, the construction of the pelican crossing does not require a permit from the Ministry of Transportation as it falls under the authority of the Jakarta Provincial Government.

“For a pelican crossing, it does not need to go through the Ministry of Transportation, it is sufficient from us alone,” he said.

He hopes the construction process can be completed within one to two weeks. “So, hopefully within one to two weeks we can finish it,” he added.
