Jakarta Transport Agency Reveals TransJakarta to Manage Ships and Ports to Thousand Islands
The Jakarta provincial government is preparing a TransJakarta Laut service to provide transport to the Thousand Islands. PT Transportasi Jakarta (TransJakarta) will not only manage the vessels but also the port areas. “For operational and technical supporting activities, these will be managed by TransJakarta going forward. So it is not only the vessels, but the management of the port areas will also be carried out by TransJakarta,” said Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub) Budi Awaludin when confirmed on Saturday (15/8/2026).
Budi stressed that the management transfer is not merely a shift of administrative authority from the Jakarta Transportation Agency to TransJakarta. The move is directed at delivering a more integrated transport service. According to Budi, the TransJakarta Laut service is expected to have better standards of safety, comfort and fairness for residents and tourists of the Thousand Islands.
Budi confirmed that the vessels currently managed by the Jakarta Transportation Agency will be transferred to TransJakarta. However, the integration does not stop at the transfer of vessels. The Jakarta provincial government wants transport to the Thousand Islands to be connected with the existing land transport network. “The transfer of vessel management from the Transportation Agency to TransJakarta is intended to integrate transport to the Thousand Islands with the TransJakarta service system already trusted by millions of Jakarta residents every day,” he said.
He said the vessel service could potentially be directly connected with land transport modes such as TransJakarta buses and Mikrotrans at departure points. With this concept, journeys by residents to the Thousand Islands and vice versa are expected to become a single multimodal transport chain. “So that residents’ journeys from home to the Thousand Islands or vice versa become one comfortable, safe and connected multimodal transport chain from land to sea,” he said.
Regarding route patterns and departure points, Budi said these are still under discussion with TransJakarta. The scheme will be finalised to suit community needs. Budi said the Jakarta provincial government is also reviewing institutional and regulatory requirements to support the management transfer. Discussions are being held with TransJakarta, BPBUMD, the Bureau of Organisation and Bureaucratic Reform, and several related regional working units.
On the regulatory side, the Jakarta provincial government is preparing a legal umbrella in the form of a regional regulation or governor regulation. The regulation will cover fares and subsidies, institutional arrangements, forms of assignment and agreements, and the transition period for management from the Jakarta Transportation Agency to TransJakarta. “We hope the scheme and roadmap along with the detailed plans can be completed soon with the best results,” he added.
