Jakarta to Switch Off Lights for 60 Minutes This Weekend to Cut Carbon Emissions
The Jakarta Provincial Government will conduct a 60-minute blackout along a number of roads on Saturday (13/6/2026) evening. The initiative is part of an Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction action to commemorate World Environment Day 2026.
Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, said the blackout will take place from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. Western Indonesia Time. It will be implemented on several protocol and arterial roads, as well as at various Jakarta landmarks such as the National Monument (Monas), the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the Welcome Monument at the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, the Pemuda Statue, the General Sudirman Statue, and the area around Jakarta City Hall.
‘Through this simple action, we can help maintain environmental quality while saving energy. If it becomes a shared habit, the impact will be even greater for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for Jakarta,’ he said in a statement on Thursday (11/6/2026).
According to him, the one-hour darkness will serve as a symbol of collective concern for the environment and the city’s future. He believes this action is not just about turning off lights, but also about encouraging the public to build energy-saving habits in their daily lives.
Dudi stated that simple steps taken together are believed to have a real impact on environmental quality. Collective public participation is considered a key factor in efforts to reduce carbon emissions and maintain the city’s environmental sustainability.
‘Small changes made together can have a big impact. We invite all citizens to make energy saving a part of their daily lifestyle for a healthier and more comfortable Jakarta for future generations,’ he said.
He explained that the blackout is carried out in accordance with Governor’s Instruction Number 14 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Blackouts for Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction. A similar action was previously conducted on Saturday (25/4/2026).
According to him, in the previous action, the electricity saved was recorded at 96.91 MWh with a cost efficiency of Rp 140,226,312. The action also contributed to reducing carbon emissions by 77.53 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
