Jakarta to resume stalled monorail project

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta city government has decided to resume the city`s stalled monorail construction project after compensating the private company that initiated it for works already done.

Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo announced the plan at a plenary session of the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) held to mark the city`s 483rd anniversary here Tuesday.

"We have reached an agreement to continue the monorail project as soon as we have settled the compensation problem with the private company that began it," Fauzi said in his address at the DPRD session.

At present, the State Financial and Development Comptrol Agency (BPKP) was making an assessment of the project`s assets the city government had to pay for, such as the pillars already built at certain locations in the city, he said.

The two-track monorail project came to a halt a few years ago because of difficulty to find investors willing to provide the funds needed to complete it.

In the meantime, the initiating company had already erected a number of pillars that would underpin the elevated ramps on which the monorail cars would run. The unfinisihed structures along some of Jakarta`s main thoroughfares were considered to be spoiling motorists` views.

The monorail project would be completed as part of the city government`s continuous efforts to create alternative mass transportation modes to match the national capital`s increasing road traffic density, Fauzi said.(*)
