Indonesia plans soon to reopen its embassy in the Afghan capital
Kabul after evacuating its staff in 1996, a foreign ministry
spokesman said on Monday.

Wahid Supriyadi said no date had yet been set as the personnel
were still being prepared.

He said the last Indonesian embassy staff were evacuated from
Kabul in 1996. Jakarta was then represented first by its mission
in India and since 1998 by the embassy in Pakistan.

A 1992-1996 civil war, which ended with the Taliban's capture
of the capital, reduced large parts of the city to rubble.

Since the Taliban's fall and the installation of an interim
government, several other embassies have reopened. --AFP
