Jakarta to observe National Press Day
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja will launch tomorrow the 1996 National Press Day in Jakarta which will mark a two- month long schedule of activities, the head of the Indonesian Journalists' Association said.
In a release made available to The Jakarta Post yesterday, Tarman Azzam said that activities will include open discussions, lectures for public and government officials, a campaign on the press code of ethics, social activities and public entertainment.
The code of ethics campaign will touch on matters concerning government officials, public interest and squatters.
AIDS will also be one of the topics of discussion, Tarman said.
In social activities, the association has raised funds for the poor and elderly, has sponsored blood donations and free circumcision for 300 children of poor families.
The association has called on the media to organize their own celebrations for National Press Day. Cooperation with local government officials, businessmen or any organization is possible, he said.
Tarman said that commemorating the day is an important way to enhance a sense of belonging among media people.
The two-month activities will end in a press exhibition in West Java, he said.(03)
