Jakarta (ANTARA) - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is studying the strategies of the City of Cannes in France in developing an economy based on hosting international events. This follows the success of the city in making the tourism and creative industries key pillars of its economy, including through the international film festival which attracts around 45,000 participants each year.

“This is extraordinary. Cannes has become a city that thrives from the event industry. In fact, 40 percent of its economic support comes from the tourism sector. This also needs to be developed in Jakarta,” said Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, Rano Karno in Jakarta, Sunday.

This was one of the results of a meeting between Rano and a delegation from the DKI Provincial Government with the Deputy Mayor of Cannes, Thomas Pariente, in Cannes, Thursday (May 14).

Rano hopes that the DKI Provincial Government can work together with the City of Cannes to open up opportunities for content markets and training in organizing international events so that Jakarta can develop like Cannes.

He also hopes that Jakarta can develop talent in the field of event management as Cannes does.

“Cannes is extraordinary. They have a state university up to doctoral level which allows graduates to have networks with international events. One day, Jakarta must be able to do this too,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Thomas said that the Cannes Film Festival held by The French Association of the International Film Festival under the leadership of Iris Knobloch, has a major economic impact on the city of Cannes.

During the 12 days of the festival, economic activity reached around 216 million euros or equivalent to IDR 4.4 trillion.

In addition to being known as a film city, Cannes has also succeeded in making various international events the main driver of the city’s economy through the tourism, media, hospitality and creative industries sectors.

The Cannes government not only facilitates the organization of the Cannes Film Festival through several major venues, including the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.

Throughout the year, Cannes also holds various international agendas, such as MIPTV and MIPCOM for the television industry, yacht and boat festivals, music festivals, to other international industrial conferences.

Not only that, every June during the summer, Cannes also holds a five-day music festival with around 15,000 visitors. This activity generates an economic impact of up to 160 million euros or equivalent to IDR 3.2 trillion.
