Jakarta to Evaluate School Building Construction, Pramono Forms Investigation Team

The Jakarta Provincial Government will form investigation and inventory teams to evaluate the condition of school buildings. This effort aims to prevent further cases of school damage.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the process of building and rehabilitating schools has so far been handled by the Education Agency, which is not actually the core task and function of that regional apparatus organisation. However, the process was handed over to the Education Agency to meet the minimum 20 per cent allocation for the education sector.

"In reality on the ground, in almost all regions, it is impossible for the Education Agency to do that. It must be contracted out and so on," he said at SDN Kebayoran Lama Selatan 09, South Jakarta, on Friday.

Therefore, he decided to form investigation and inventory teams to oversee the process of school construction and rehabilitation. The Education Agency is considered not to have the capacity to supervise building structures.

Pramono cited an example from a direct inspection of SDN Kebayoran Lama Selatan 09, which revealed issues with the building framework suspected of not being properly prepared during rehabilitation in 2011. Consequently, the investigation team will trace the causes of the damage, while the inventory team is tasked with mapping the condition of other school buildings that potentially face similar problems.

"Because previously, construction like this was all under the Education Agency. Now we are assigning assistance to supervise, because not everyone in the Education Agency has the expertise to build and so on. There will be support from Citata and Bina Marga," he said.

Pramono also instructed the teams to record the condition of other school buildings in Jakarta. The results of this inventory will later serve as the basis for the Jakarta Provincial Government to carry out school building rehabilitation.
