Jakarta - The Jakarta provincial government will tighten its waste segregation system to ensure that not all rubbish from Jakarta is sent to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java.

“Our waste volume is between 7,400 and 8,000 tonnes per day. The vast majority is not separated, then sent to Bantargebang,” said Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo at Jakarta City Hall on Monday.

According to him, this waste segregation policy also aligns with guidance from the Ministry of Environment. With better segregation, not all waste needs to end up at the final disposal site.

“For this reason, we will carry out a sorting process at the source. And simultaneously to ensure that everything is not sent to Bantargebang. Because Bantargebang must begin to face restrictions, as its capacity is already severely limited,” Pramono explained.

“Only zone 4A is being closed. However, zone 3 will continue to be used for storage,” Pramono said.

Pramono stated that the closure is being conducted so that the handling and recovery process in the landslide-affected area can proceed safely. Meanwhile, the operational shipment of waste from Jakarta continues with diversion to other zones.

Pramono also mentioned that Jakarta’s administration is preparing two temporary waste disposal locations to accommodate rubbish from the capital.

The two additional zones are being prepared on a temporary basis whilst awaiting restoration of the landslide-affected area in zone 4A.

The government hopes that recovery can be completed quickly so that operations in the zone can return to normal.
