Jakarta targets 30 percent greenhouse gas emission reduction by 2030
The Jakarta Provincial Government is targeting a 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 as part of efforts to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2050.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stressed that transport is the main focus because it contributes 52 percent of total direct emissions in Jakarta.
“Jakarta needs a mobility system that can expand access, increase productivity, reduce emissions, and connect the metropolitan area as a single economic unit. This direction forms the basis of the low-carbon mobility transformation we are building,” Pramono said while attending the Indonesia International Transport Summit (IITS) 2026 at The Tribrata Hotel and Convention Center, South Jakarta, on Thursday.
According to him, the high emissions from the transport sector are inseparable from the public’s dependence on private vehicles.
This condition also impacts congestion, air quality, productivity, efficiency, the quality of life of residents, and the city’s competitiveness.
In the transport sector, the Jakarta Provincial Government is targeting a public transport mode share of 55 percent by 2045.
This target is pursued through two approaches, namely the Pull Strategy and the Push Strategy.
“The Pull Strategy is directed at improving the quality and attractiveness of public transport. This is carried out through the expansion of Transjabodetabek, MRT and LRT routes, free transport for 15 community groups, the development of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) and Park and Ride, as well as improvements to pedestrian facilities, bicycle lanes, and water transport,” Pramono explained.
Meanwhile, he said, the Push Strategy is implemented to control the use of private vehicles through the odd-even policy, parking disincentives for vehicles that fail emission tests, Low Emission Zones, and Electronic Road Pricing (ERP).
Pramono added that the Jakarta Provincial Government is also continuing to encourage changes in public behaviour, including through the ‘Wednesday Use Public Transport’ movement and ‘Friday Cycling Day’ for Jakarta civil servants (ASN).
“The Jakarta Provincial Government is also accelerating the green transition through the electrification of public transport,” Pramono concluded.
