“We are currently commissioning the Rorotan facility. Hopefully, it will be completed soon so Rorotan can operate normally,” Governor Pramono Anung said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday.

He added that even at partial capacity, “1,000 tons per day is very good for current operations in Rorotan and will significantly reduce waste, perhaps by around 1,000–1,500 tons.”

The Rorotan Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) plant is expected to cut the volume of waste sent to Bantargebang in Bekasi, West Java, where daily inflows reach 7,400–8,000 tons.

Pramono acknowledged the facility may not immediately meet its full target but stressed that its contribution would still be substantial.

The provincial government is pursuing additional measures to reduce reliance on Bantargebang, including stricter waste sorting at the source and building more processing facilities within Jakarta.

The urgency of these efforts was underscored by a deadly landslide at Bantargebang on Sunday, when heavy rainfall triggered the collapse of a 50-meter-high pile of waste in Zone IV.

Five people were killed, and four remain missing.

“The rainfall in Jakarta was 264 millimeters per day on Sunday. That’s one of the highest rainfall events in Jakarta,” Pramono said, attributing the disaster to extreme weather.
