The Jakarta-Tangerang toll road section has suffered extensive damage resulting in severe congestion extending for dozens of kilometres.

The road damage went viral on social media platform X, including in a 13-second video posted on Tuesday (10 March) by account @txtdaritng showing the potholed condition of the Jakarta-Tangerang toll road surface.

As a result, lengthy traffic congestion occurred on the Cikupa-Karang Tengah toll stretch towards Jakarta on Tuesday (10 March). Vehicles queued from kilometre 37 to kilometre 13.

Based on monitoring by CNNIndonesia.com at the site on Tuesday afternoon, the most severe road damage was located in the Karawaci area. Additionally, damage also occurred in the direction from Jakarta to Tangerang, such as before the Kunciran toll exit and before the Bitung toll exit.

Previously, the Jakarta-Tangerang toll road section, specifically from kilometre 23 to kilometre 24, had been flooded due to overflow from the Sabi River on Sunday (8 March). This condition left damage to the toll road surface.

Potholes in the road caused vehicles to slow down and some drivers were forced to avoid the damaged areas, triggering traffic congestion. Anggi, a road user, expressed frustration at being trapped in congestion for hours due to unrepaired road damage.

“The congestion lasted a very long time. It turned out to be because of potholes at several points. They should be repaired quickly because this is a toll road,” he said.

He considered the conditions highly detrimental to motorists. In his view, as a toll road, the stretch should maintain high service and maintenance standards to avoid endangering road users.

Similar sentiments were expressed by container lorry driver Madi, who stated that the road damage caused vehicle flow to slow down and congestion, particularly during peak hours.

“I wanted to deliver goods to Pasar Kemis, but because traffic was congested it delayed the delivery process and caused losses,” Madi complained.

Meanwhile, Senior Manager Representative Office 2 Jasamarga Metropolitan Tollroad Plaza Toll Cililitan, Jakarta, Ginanjar Bekti R stated that his company had undertaken repairs in stages.

“The maintenance activities are being carried out together with PT Jasamarga Tollroad Maintenance (JMTM) as the toll road maintenance service provider,” said Ginanjar in a statement received by CNNIndonesia.com on Tuesday.

Ginanjar explained that rigid reconstruction work in the Tangerang direction had been undertaken on lane 1 specifically from kilometre 15+240 to kilometre 15+270 on Monday (9 March).

Meanwhile, scrapping, filling and overlay (SFO) work was conducted in the Jakarta direction on lane 3 from kilometre 26+350 to kilometre 26+250 on Sunday (8 March).

“Jasa Marga apologises for the inconvenience caused by these works,” he said.

Ginanjar urged motorists to remain careful, comply with traffic signs, and follow the guidance of field personnel.

“Also plan travel time and routes and ensure sufficient electronic card balance for smooth travel,” he appealed.
