Jakarta — Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono has confirmed plans to focus on resolving the debt issues of the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway first, before extending the rail line to Surabaya.

Yudhoyono explained that this process is being conducted in parallel with initial financial restructuring steps for KCIC (Indonesian-Chinese High-Speed Railway). This approach has already been discussed with Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, Danantara CEO Rosan Roeslani, and relevant stakeholders.

“Why is this important? Because before we develop a more serious roadmap to extend or develop the Jakarta-Surabaya line, or even potentially reach Banyuwangi as directed by President Prabowo Subianto, we should first ensure the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway is completed. This means the solutions can be properly implemented, after which we can develop the next phase,” Yudhoyono said at the Presidential Staff Office on Tuesday (11 March 2026).

Yudhoyono explained that the extension of the high-speed rail route continues to be developed jointly with the Ministry of Transportation and state-owned railway operator KAI to ensure it delivers greater benefits to the public. A longer route allows the train to operate at optimum speed.

“Imagine a speed of 350 km/h — if the distance is 600 to 800 kilometres, the speed will really be felt, and the benefits will be more apparent compared with a shorter track,” Yudhoyono said.

“Because once peak speed is reached, the train must slow down again, reducing speed in preparation for stopping at the next station,” he added.

According to the General Chairman of the Democratic Party, the high-speed rail route needs to be extended as it could become a significant turning point or game changer.

“If the Jakarta-Surabaya route can be covered in approximately 3 hours by train, I believe this will transform the development landscape whilst also introducing new economic growth opportunities all along that corridor,” Yudhoyono explained.
