Jakarta Students to Finish School by 2pm During Ramadan
The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) has stipulated that school dismissal times during Ramadan must be no later than 2pm Western Indonesian Time. The policy has been adjusted to provide students with space for independent learning and worship activities.
Jakarta Education Agency Head Nahdiana said the school hour adjustments had been set out in a circular letter based on policies from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
“The hours have been adjusted, so the latest finish time is 2pm WIB. This is to provide space for independent learning with families and communities at their respective places of worship,” Nahdiana said at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday (19 February 2026).
Meanwhile, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the school hour adjustments formed part of the provincial government’s preparations for welcoming Ramadan. In addition to regulating school hours, the administration is also coordinating with police and the Transport Agency to anticipate potential traffic congestion, particularly approaching the time for breaking the fast.
According to Pramono, traffic congestion patterns during Ramadan typically shift in timing. Whereas peak hours previously occurred from 6am to 7am, during Ramadan congestion tends to shift to between 8am and 9am, with further congestion in the late afternoon approaching the breaking of the fast.
“We have already coordinated with the Jakarta Metropolitan Police and the Transport Agency to manage this, especially in the afternoons when people are hunting for takjil snacks and preparing to break their fast,” he said.
