Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial government is strengthening waste management at source through its Large-Scale Social Collaboration Programme (KSBB) for the Environment, in an effort to reduce the volume of waste sent to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST).

The programme connects community needs with support from businesses, ranging from providing waste-management facilities to education aimed at building the habit of sorting waste at home.

Jakarta Environment Agency Deputy Head Purwanti Suryandari said on Thursday that waste management must begin at household level. The availability of facilities must be accompanied by changes in public behaviour so that waste sorting and processing can be carried out consistently.

“Everyone is responsible for the waste they produce and should sort it at home. Waste that can still be processed needs to be separated so it can be reused, rather than all of it ending up at the Bantargebang integrated waste-processing site,” she said in an official statement.

One implementation of the KSBB Environment programme’s waste-management cluster is taking place in RW 06, Srengseng Sawah urban village, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta.

Under the programme, the Jakarta Environment Agency brings residents’ needs together with support from partners, including waste-collection equipment, composting facilities and education on waste sorting.

In RW 06, Srengseng Sawah, PT BRI Multifinance Indonesia (BRI Finance) has contributed two electric motorised carts, seven 200-litre composting bins and one compost sifter with a capacity of 100–150 kilograms per hour.

The support also includes 145 eight-litre buckets, 10 20-litre buckets, 11 60-litre bins and five 120-litre rubbish bins.

In addition to supplying equipment, BRI Finance provided waste-sorting training for children and teenagers to foster waste-management habits from an early age.

BRI Finance President Director Ignatius Susatyo Wijoyo said waste issues require joint involvement from the government, businesses and the public. Through the KSBB Environment programme, the company hopes its support will assist sanitation workers while encouraging residents to participate actively.

“We hope the facilities and equipment provided will make sanitation workers’ jobs in the field easier and faster, and encourage residents to make sorting waste at home a habit,” he said.
