Jakarta (ANTARA) — The Jakarta Provincial Government is stabilising the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility area in Bekasi City, West Java, to prevent potential subsequent landslides.

“The arrangement and strengthening of the dumping zone are being carried out gradually so that the dump structure returns to a stable and safe condition for on-site operations,” said Asep Kuswanto, Head of the Jakarta Environment Agency (DLH), in Jakarta on Sunday.

Asep said stabilisation and arrangement of the dumping zone would be performed once the area is deemed safe. Safety in operating the waste management service at Bantargebang TPST is the primary priority.

“After the area is deemed safe, we will immediately carry out stabilisation and arrangement of the dumping zone so that conditions return to control,” he said.

Therefore, one temporary disposal point at Bantargebang TPST was opened at night to ensure smooth rhythm of waste truck movements from Jakarta. Meanwhile, two other disposal points are still being tidied.

Asep urged the heads of the Environmental Service offices (Sudin LH) in Jakarta to delay waste deliveries to Bantargebang TPST until the evacuation of victims is completed.

This step was taken to ensure Jakarta’s waste collection system continues to operate, while also minimising truck queues during the evacuation and handling process in the affected area.

The waste piles at Bantargebang TPST, Bekasi City, had collapsed, resulting in four deaths. The victims included a stall owner, a scavenger and a driver from the Sudin LH of Central Jakarta.

Additionally, one driver of a Sudin LH Jakarta Selatan truck, Slamet, sustained minor injuries and was evacuated promptly for medical treatment at a nearby health facility.

In response to the incident, the Jakarta Provincial Government activated a disaster emergency operation to manage the landslide to ensure the safety of field personnel, the handling of victims, and stabilisation of the affected area so that waste management services can be restored promptly.
