Jakarta sees more tourists

JAKARTA (JP): The city saw 816,281 foreign tourist arrive in the January to June period this year, a 29.07 percent increase from 632,396 tourists in the corresponding period last year.

Head of Jakarta Tourism Agency, Fauzie Bowo, told reporters yesterday that the tourists visited the city through the Soekarno-Hatta airport and the Tanjung Priok port.

Some entered the city through the Halim Perdanakusuma airport as special guests, he said.

Indonesia expects to see between 4.78 million and 5.05 million tourist arrivals this year, bringing some US$6.57 billion or $6.94 billion in foreign exchange.

At least 6 million foreign tourists are expected to visit the country by the end of the current Five-Year Development Plan in March 1999, spending at least $8.22 billion. Two million of them are expected to visit the city, spending some $3.9 billion. (icn)
