Jakarta SDA Office Holds 'Ciliwung River Adventure' Educational Tour
The Jakarta Water Resources Office (SDA), in collaboration with various parties, presented an educational river tour titled ‘Ciliwung River Adventure’ on the Ciliwung River, BNI City segment, Central Jakarta. The activity was organised jointly with the Jakarta Environmental Office (DLH), the Jakarta Parks and City Forest Office (Distamhut), the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Health Office, the Khatulistiwa Rescue Team, and Sobat Air Jakarta. ‘This is part of the series of events for Jakarta’s 499th anniversary. The primary aim is to educate the public not to throw rubbish into the river,’ said Secretary of the Jakarta Water Resources Office, Nugraharyadi, on Saturday. Through this activity, the public will also be educated on the history of the Ciliwung River, which is the oldest river in Jakarta. Upon arrival, visitors are asked to gather and are divided into several groups. They then receive a presentation from the event committee about the origins of the Ciliwung River up to the present day. Afterwards, visitors are given safety instructions for the river trek by the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). During the river trek, visitors are further educated about waste and river conservation by the Khatulistiwa Rescue Team. Visitors are also allowed to collect floating rubbish from the river using nets. The rubbish is then gathered in sacks and brought back to the dock. After the river trek, visitors receive education on waste sorting from the Jakarta Environmental Office. The rubbish collected from the river is then separated at a designated area. ‘It may be a small thing, but we must make it a habit for the community,’ said Nugraharyadi. Members of the public interested in joining this educational tour can register via the link listed on the Instagram account @sobatair.jkt. The activity is free of charge; however, the Ciliwung River Adventure is not held at all times. The event is only held once a month. This month, the Ciliwung River Adventure was held to coincide with the peak of Jakarta’s 499th anniversary celebrations on Saturday (27/6) and Sunday (28/6). ‘For 2026, we are running it from May, June, July, August, September, and October, for six months. Because if we hold it in November and December, the water level will certainly be high, making it very dangerous,’ explained Nugraharyadi. Through the ‘Ciliwung River Adventure’ activity, it is hoped that the public can become agents of change, so that in the future they will be more aware of the importance of protecting the environment and sorting waste independently.
