Jakarta Schools Allowed to Implement Distance Learning Tomorrow Amid Independence Day Festivities

Schools in Jakarta are allowed to implement distance learning (PJJ) on Tuesday (18/8) tomorrow. This policy is still part of efforts to enliven and give meaning to Indonesia’s Independence Day.

This is stated in Circular Number 87/SE/2026 concerning the Implementation of Flexible Work Duties for Civil Servants and Distance Learning in the Context of Celebrating and Giving Meaning to Independence within the Jakarta Provincial Education Office.

Special Staff to the Governor for Public Communication, Chico Hakim, emphasised that the implementation of PJJ on 18 August is not an obligation for schools.

“Heads of state and private education units may implement distance learning on Tuesday, 18 August 2026,” said Chico when confirmed on Monday (17/8/2026).

Chico said the decision to implement PJJ lies with each education unit. Schools must also ensure that teaching and learning activities proceed according to the learning plan.

“To further enliven celebration activities in the community and give meaning to independence day,” he said.

He stressed that the policy is not related to circulating demonstration issues. The implementation of PJJ is part of efforts to enliven independence celebrations and is in line with the appeal of the Minister of State Secretary.

In the circular, education units that implement PJJ are asked to pay attention to a number of provisions. First, the implementation of PJJ must still pay attention to the achievement of the learning plan.

Second, education units are asked to provide assistance and monitoring of the implementation of PJJ. Schools must also provide alternative learning if there are obstacles.

Third, schools are asked to communicate intensively with parents or guardians as well as members of the education unit regarding the implementation of learning.

Thus, schools in Jakarta are allowed to implement PJJ on 18 August 2026, but it is neither mandatory nor prohibited.

“It is allowed, yes. Not mandatory or prohibited,” Chico stressed.
