Jakarta Schools Allowed to Implement Distance Learning on 18 August 2026

The DKI Jakarta provincial government has permitted state and private educational institutions in Jakarta to implement distance learning (PJJ) on Tuesday, 18 August 2026. The policy was adopted to follow up on an appeal from the Minister of State Secretary (Mensesneg) aimed at providing space for the public to enliven the series of celebrations for the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence.

Special Staff to the Governor of DKI Jakarta, Chico Hakim, emphasised that implementing PJJ on that date is not mandatory. Educational institutions are given flexibility to adjust teaching and learning activities according to each school’s conditions.

“To further enliven celebration activities in the community and give meaning to independence day. In accordance with the Mensesneg’s appeal,” said Chico in a written statement on Monday (17/8).

The policy is officially set out in Circular Letter Number 87/SE/2026. The circular regulates the flexible implementation of official duties for civil servants (ASN) as well as distance learning in the context of celebrating independence within the DKI Jakarta Education Office.

Although permitted, schools that choose to implement PJJ are asked to ensure that learning plans are achieved. Heads of educational institutions are required to ensure that the teaching and learning process continues to run according to previously established curriculum targets.

“Heads of educational institutions are required to provide assistance and monitoring during PJJ. If there are obstacles, schools are asked to provide alternative learning by coordinating with the head of the education sub-department,” Chico added.

In addition, schools are instructed to build intensive communication with parents or guardians. This is intended to ensure that all members of the educational community understand the mechanism for implementing learning during the 81st independence anniversary celebration period.
