Jakarta Safe, Pramono Requests Mall Managers to Remove High Fences

The Jakarta Provincial Government has requested mall and office managers to immediately dismantle newly installed high fences. The Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung, ensured that the capital remains safe and that there is no need for excessive concern.

“Regarding the installation of fences, I have also observed them. It may be part of certain concerns, but in due course, I will certainly request that those fences be removed again,” Pramono told reporters on Friday, 31 July 2026. Pramono highlighted the issue, noting its resemblance to the protests and riots that occurred in August 2025. He stated that his administration would coordinate with the TNI, Polri, and other law enforcement agencies to maintain security and order in Jakarta. “Hopefully, Jakarta will always be safe, comfortable, and bring joy to everyone enjoying the city, much like how we are all enjoying Blok M today,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Shopping Centre Management Association (APPBI) stated that the installation of fences in shopping centres, including those in Jakarta, is an effort to maintain public order. The General Chairman of APPBI, Alphonzus Widjaja, noted that installing fences is not a new practice, as many shopping centres have been equipped with them since their construction. He emphasised that the fences are intended to serve as a boundary between the shopping centre areas and public spaces, including areas used for expressing opinions in public.

On-site observations revealed a newly installed grey fence, 100 metres long and 2.5 metres high, stretching in front of the Kota Kasablanka (Kokas) shopping centre in South Jakarta. The fence was positioned near the main vehicle entrance from Jalan Raya Casablanca. Previously, social media had been abuzz with reports of several shopping centres in various regions, such as Surabaya and Jakarta, simultaneously installing fences.
