Jakarta Residents Warned of Potential Coastal Flooding Until May 21st

The Jakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has reminded residents in the northern coastal areas of Jakarta to be aware of the potential for coastal flooding or ‘rob’ between May 14th and 21st, 2026.

The warning was issued by the Jakarta BPBD through its official Instagram account following information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) regarding the potential for maximum sea-level rise in the coastal areas of Jakarta.

“The phenomenon of maximum sea-level rise coinciding with the Super New Moon phase (new moon and perigee) on May 17th, 2026, has the potential to increase the maximum sea-level, resulting in coastal flooding or ‘rob’ in the northern coastal areas of Jakarta,” wrote the Jakarta BPBD on Friday, May 15th, 2026.

The BPBD has urged residents in coastal areas to anticipate the impact of the ‘rob’ flooding during this period.

Residents in these areas are asked to increase their vigilance regarding the potential for rising sea levels.

Residents are also asked to increase their vigilance regarding changes in weather and sea conditions, especially during high tide.

In addition, residents are urged to avoid activities in coastal areas that are at risk of being affected by the ‘rob’ flooding.

The BPBD also asked residents to ensure that the drainage system around their homes is functioning properly to prevent water accumulation.
