Jakarta Residents: Volcanic Dust from Mount Anak Krakatau Settles on Vehicles and Swimming Pools
Volcanic dust from Mount Anak Krakatau has reportedly reached several areas in Jakarta. Numerous residents have begun finding dust, suspected to stem from volcanic activity, adhering to vehicles, sandals, and even appearing in swimming pools and fish ponds.
Andriawan (40), a resident of Gang Potlot, Duren Tiga, Pancoran, South Jakarta, learned of information regarding volcanic ash reaching Jakarta on Sunday (6/9/202 $ ext{6}$) at approximately 02:00 WIB. He received this information via an office WhatsApp group.
At around 06:00 WIB, Andriawan noticed that his motorcycle, which had been parked in his yard since Saturday afternoon, was covered in dust. He believes this is volcanic dust due to its distinct characteristics compared to ordinary dust.
Andriawan chose not to clean the dust immediately with a cloth. He plans to spray the vehicle with water first before wiping it to avoid the possibility of scratches on the motorcycle’s body.
“If I wipe it directly with a cloth, it could scratch the body, so I will spray it with water before wiping it,” Andriawan told Republika.
Despite finding dust on his vehicle, Andriawan assessed that the air quality around his residence, located not far from the Slank music group headquarters, remains relatively normal. However, he has chosen to remain vigilant by wearing a mask when leaving the house. “It seems normal, but just to be safe, I will use a mask when I go out,” he said.
Similar testimonies were shared by Karlie (45), a resident of Cipayung, East Jakarta. He claimed to have seen dust, suspected to be volcanic ash, around his home since Saturday (5/9/2026) night.
