Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) member Gusti Arief has urged the capital's residents to use the JAKI application to report any violations in No-Smoking Zones (KTR).

"We appeal to the public to use the JAKI application to report every KTR violation so that we can follow up promptly," said Gusti in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday.

He said that Jakarta Regional Regulation (Perda) on No-Smoking Zones, Number 7 of 2025, has been enacted, and it serves as an initial framework that still requires strict oversight from civil society in its implementation.

He therefore called on the public, particularly young people, to help oversee the enforcement of the regulation so that the sanctions and enforcement mechanisms carried out by the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) can operate effectively.

The statement was in response to findings by the Youth Representative Council (DPRemaja), a youth alliance under the Indonesian Youth Council for Tactical Changes (IYCTC), regarding pervasive cigarette advertising at various small shops targeting nearby residents close to public spaces and educational institutions in Jakarta.

"We are still finding extensive promotional activities at various small shops, targeting nearby residents and located close to public spaces and educational institutions," said DPRemaja representative from Jakarta, Bryan Akhtur Alexander.

DPRemaja also urged that tobacco excise revenue-sharing funds (DBH CHT) and Regional Cigarette Tax (PRD) be optimised to strengthen enforcement of the No-Smoking Zone regulation.

To the Jakarta DPRD, DPRemaja emphasised the importance of budgeting and oversight functions to ensure these funds are genuinely allocated towards curbing cigarette advertising and protecting children.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta Provincial Government stated that the No-Smoking Zone regulation aligns with global best practices, covering the prohibition of smoking and e-cigarette use in public spaces and workplaces, restrictions on tobacco product sales at certain retail points, and bans on tobacco product advertising, promotion, and sponsorship.

Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno affirmed that the essence of the No-Smoking Zone policy is not a total ban but rather the fair and balanced regulation of shared spaces.

"This policy is not intended to stifle economic activity. Industry can continue to operate, but with stricter regulations so that public health becomes the top priority," said Rano.
