Jakarta Residents Urged to Implement 5M Protocol Amid Anak Krakatau Volcanic Ash
The Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung, has requested that residents remain calm following the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau, which has reached several areas in Jakarta. Nevertheless, the public is asked to increase vigilance and follow official government information regarding the progress of the eruption.
Pramono stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government continues to coordinate with the central government, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), and relevant agencies to monitor the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait.
“As is known, Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at Level 3, or alert status. At this time, volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau has spread to several regions in Indonesia, including parts of Jakarta,” said Pramono in an official video received by Media Indonesia on Sunday (6/9/202<0xA0>26).
According to Pramono, the direction and extent of the volcanic ash spread are heavily influenced by wind conditions. Therefore, the Jakarta Provincial Government, alongside BMKG and related agencies, will continue to monitor the movement of the ash to anticipate its impact on the community.
Pramono requested that Jakarta residents in areas affected by volcanic ash implement a set of protective measures, which he referred to as the ‘5M’ protocol:
“In such an occasion, we ask Jakarta residents to monitor information from official channels of the central government, BMKG, the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), and to refrain from spreading unverified information,” Pramono said.
Residents are also urged to seek immediate medical assistance if they experience health disturbances due to exposure to volcanic ash. “Please visit the nearest health facility immediately if you experience worsening respiratory or vision symptoms,” he added.
A Special Staffer to the Governor of Jakarta, Chico Hakim, added that the Jakarta Provincial Government continues to monitor the impact of the volcanic ash spread on the Jakarta region. Based on data from the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau occurred on Sunday (6/9/2026) at 07:10 WIB with a maximum amplitude of 50 millimetres and a duration of 16 seconds.
The status of Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III (Alert). A BMKG update at 09:03 WIB recorded further eruptive activity with a maximum amplitude of 19 millimetres and a duration of approximately 29 seconds. The ash spread was observed to extend to Purbalingga Regency, Central Java, as well as parts of the Jakarta Special Capital Region.
“We ask Jakarta residents to remain calm but vigilant. Follow official information from BMKG, PVMBG, BPBD, and the Provincial Government. The health and safety of our citizens are our priority,” said Chico.
In addition to wearing masks, residents are advised to use protective eyewear and avoid rubbing their eyes if they come into contact with ash. Food and beverages should also be tightly covered to prevent contamination. Drivers are also urged to be cautious as volcanic ash can reduce visibility and make roads slippery.
