Jakarta Residents Urged to Consistently Sort Waste from Home
The South Jakarta Residents’ Initiative held a community-based waste sorting socialisation and training event at the Ciganjur Community Hall, Jagakarsa District, South Jakarta, on Saturday (20/6). This activity represents a joint effort to increase public awareness and involvement in household waste management.
Bintang Mangkauk, Coordinator of the South Jakarta Residents’ Initiative, stated that sorting waste from each home is the first step towards creating a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment. Bintang wants Jakarta residents to better understand the types, categories, and impacts of household waste, as well as to train the community to carry out waste sorting in a simple, practical, and community-based manner.
“We hope this activity becomes an initial step to build a culture of waste sorting that starts from home, is carried out consistently by residents, and becomes a collective movement that has a real impact on the environment,” Bintang said in a written statement.
Speakers at the event included Arif Hidayat and Reinhat P. Adam from the Jagakarsa District Environmental Implementation Unit, and Ida Farida, the South Jakarta Regional Coordinator from the Indonesian Waste Bank Association (ASOBSI). Also present were members of the South Jakarta Residents’ Initiative management from the regional, district, and sub-district coordinator levels.
The speakers provided insights into waste management policy, household waste sorting techniques, and the role of waste banks in supporting a circular economy at the community level. Participants not only received socialisation materials but also practical training on how to sort organic, inorganic, and residual waste, as well as an introduction to waste management mechanisms through waste banks that can provide economic benefits to the community.
Through this activity, the South Jakarta Residents’ Initiative hopes to foster collective awareness and real action among residents to support sustainable waste management programmes and create residential environments that are cleaner, healthier, and more comfortable for all citizens.
Previously, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo issued Gubernatorial Instruction (Ingub) DKI 5/2026 on the waste sorting and processing movement last May. Pramono hopes that the programme of sorting waste at source can reduce the burden of waste disposal at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site. He said facilities and infrastructure will soon be prepared to support the waste sorting movement in residents’ homes.
