Jakarta Residents React to Mall Barricade Controversy

Jakarta (ANTARA) - A number of residents in South Jakarta have voiced a range of opinions, both for and against, the phenomenon of tall fences being installed at several shopping centres, reportedly to anticipate potential demonstrations in August 2026.

“I am for it. It is private property, so I think it is reasonable if the developer wants to implement a policy they deem necessary,” said Albastomi, a visitor at Blok M Plaza, when met at the location on Monday.

According to Albastomi, a private company has the authority to manage and make policies within its property, including building fences as part of efforts to improve security and maintain order.

Meanwhile, another mall visitor, Satriyo, felt that the presence of fences over three metres high at several malls and buildings in Jakarta raised questions.

“In my opinion, it raises a big question as to why it is being done simultaneously. Moreover, many media outlets are linking this phenomenon to a precautionary measure against potential unrest in August, similar to last year,” Satriyo said.

He assessed that this could cause public concern and anxiety over whether such a narrative of unrest might actually materialise.

In their concluding remarks, Albastomi and Satriyo agreed that another purpose for the malls building fences could be for aesthetic reasons, aiming to increase their appeal to visitors.

They expressed hope that, beyond just building fences, facilities such as gardens and fountains would also be added, so that the objective of area improvement is better understood by the public and does not raise further questions.

Based on ANTARA’s observation at Blok M Plaza, the fence that had previously been installed has now been dismantled. Only the supporting poles remain visible at the site.
