The public has begun hunting for face masks following the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau to several areas, including Jakarta.

A number of residents swarmed mask vendors in the Andara toll road underpass area, Pondok Labu, South Jakarta, on Sunday (6/9).

As reported, mask stalls were crowded with people purchasing large quantities, with some buying at least two boxes containing 50 pieces per box. Some residents also sought smaller packs of 10, masks suitable for children, and masks specifically designed for hijab users.

Dian and Supri, residents of Lebak Bulus II, intentionally purchased masks due to the current situation involving volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in Jakarta. They are increasing their stock to anticipate a prolonged ash dispersal.

“I usually buy masks, but this time it is because of the ash,” said Supri.

“The vendor said more stock would arrive this afternoon. The ones I usually buy are cheap, around Rp8,000, but they have run out,” added Dian.

Similarly, Reino, a resident of Andara, stated that the poor air quality caused by the volcanic ash prompted his purchase. Reino admitted to being shocked when his house was filled with volcanic ash since the morning.

“I actually always keep masks prepared at home because our air quality is often poor,” said Reino. “The heat is extraordinary and there are many viruses and diseases, so it is very effective to keep masks available.”

The Head of the Jakarta Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Marulitua Sijabat, has urged residents to remain vigilant regarding the impact of the volcanic ash.

Marulitua outlined several steps that Jakarta residents can take to face the volcanic ash rain from Mount Anak Krakatau, which has begun to cover parts of Jakarta.

First, use a mask when performing activities outside the house. Standard cloth masks are less optimal for filtering volcanic ash particles.

Second, close doors, windows, and house ventilation. Residents are also advised to turn off fans or air conditioning units that draw air from the outside if the surrounding air is affected by ash.

Third, reduce outdoor activities, particularly for infants, children, the elderly, pregnant women, and residents with asthma, lung disease, or heart disease.

Furthermore, if there is ash around the house, residents are requested to dampen it with water before cleaning. Ash should not be swept while dry, as this can cause particles to become airborne and inhaled.

Fifth, cover all water and food storage. Water or food exposed to volcanic ash should not be consumed.

Sixth, residents experiencing severe shortness of breath, chest pain, persistent coughing, or worsening eye irritation are urged to seek immediate medical assistance at a health facility.

Seventh, contact the Jakarta Siaga service via number 112 to report emergencies within the Jakarta area.
