Jakarta Regional Council Criticises DKI Provincial Government: Residents Required to Sort Waste, but Facilities Are Minimal

The Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) has criticised the household waste sorting policy implemented by the DKI Provincial Government, deeming it unprepared in terms of field facilities.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Judistira Hermawan, Chairman of the Special Committee (Pansus) on Waste Management of the DKI DPRD, stated that residents are already encouraged to sort waste at home, yet they remain confused about where to dispose of it.

“If we have already sorted it at home, where do we put this waste once we take it out? We cannot just issue appeals without preparing the facilities, infrastructure, and support,” Judistira said in a statement received by Kompas.com on Tuesday (5/4/2026).

The lack of infrastructure and facilities is cited as one of the reasons why the household waste sorting programme has stalled.

Judistira assessed that the level of public understanding and discipline still needs to be improved through ongoing education.

Waste management in Jakarta is currently in an emergency category. The continuously increasing waste volume is placing greater strain on the existing system.

“The current waste management situation in Jakarta has entered the emergency category. This is the reason for forming the Pansus on Waste Management, so that future handling is more directed and comprehensive,” he said.

Additionally, the central government’s policy to limit waste shipments to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site starting 1 August poses a new challenge.

“We can no longer rely on Bantargebang. All parties must be involved in waste management in Jakarta,” he emphasised.

Through the Pansus, the DPRD is urging the acceleration of facility provision, increased education, and overall improvement of the waste management system.

The target is for Jakarta to reduce its dependency on Bantargebang to the point of no longer sending waste there by 2029.

Previously, DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung had signed a Governor’s Instruction (Ingub) regarding waste sorting as the basis for residents to start sorting waste at home.
