Jakarta records Central Java, East Java and West Java as Jakarta's largest suppliers of sacrificial animals
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) has recorded Central Java, East Java, and West Java as the top suppliers of sacrificial animals to Jakarta ahead of Eid al-Adha 2026. ‘The largest sources are indeed Central Java, East Java, and West Java that supply sacrificial animals to Jakarta ahead of Eid al-Adha,’ said Hasudungan A. Sidabalok, head of the DKI Jakarta Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries (KPKP), during a livestock check ahead of Eid al-Adha 2026 at Perumda Dharma Jaya, East Jakarta, on Thursday. Thousands of livestock from various regions are now entering the capital under tightened health supervision. In addition to Java, supplies also come from West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, Bali, and Lampung. Hasudungan explained that every animal entering Jakarta must meet strict health requirements. Each livestock must have a Surat Keterangan Kesehatan Hewan (SKKH) and a Veterinary Certificate from the region of origin. Checks are conducted through the national iSIKHNAS system, which enables the government to monitor the origin and health status of livestock digitally. ‘Veterinarians in the origin region will coordinate with us to ensure the animals sent are truly healthy,’ Hasudungan said. In addition to administrative checks, the Jakarta Provincial Government also deploys teams of veterinarians and paramedics to the field to conduct on-site clinical inspections at livestock sale locations. The inspections are intended to detect dangerous diseases such as Foot-and-Mouth Disease (PMK), anthrax, and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), which have recently drawn government attention. If disease indications are found, samples will be taken to the Jakarta Provincial Government’s laboratory for further testing. Hasudungan assured that sacrificial animals entering Jakarta have also been vaccinated in accordance with the national programme, particularly against PMK and anthrax. With the increasing distribution of sacrificial animals from various regions to Jakarta, the Pemprov DKI ensures supervision remains tightened so that the public obtain healthy and safe-to-consume sacrificial animals. In the lead-up to Eid al-Adha, the DKI Jakarta Food Security, Maritime Affairs, and Agriculture Agency (KPKP) reminds and urges the public about tips for choosing healthy sacrificial animals that comply with Islamic law with careful scrutiny. In addition to complying with Islamic law, sacrificial animals must be healthy to ensure safe consumption and welfare. Hasudungan noted that the public should understand a number of basic criteria before buying sacrificial animals, whether goats, sheep, cattle, or carabaos. He said that the chosen sacrificial animal must fulfil Islamic shari’a requirements, i.e., be healthy, free from physical defects, not underweight, and of sufficient age in accordance with religious provisions. The Islamic requirements for sacrificial animals include being healthy and free from defects such as blindness, lameness, broken horns, tail detachment, or ear tip damage. Hasudungan added that the public should also pay attention to the physical health of the animal before purchasing. Healthy animals are expected to yield meat that is safe for consumption and support a proper Eid al-Adha sacrifice.
