Jakarta re-evaluates actions that can curb air pollution
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government has re-identified actions that substantially contribute to reducing air pollution in the capital and included them in a draft Governor Regulation (Ranpergub) on the Air Pollution Control Strategy (SPPU).
“Indeed, for example, what percentage reduction can emission tests achieve for PM10, PM2.5 and so forth? Hopefully this can be completed,” said Erni Pelita Fitratunnisa, Head of the Pollution Control and Environmental Damage Control Sub-Directorate at the Jakarta Environment Agency (DLH).
The target is that the draft ranpergub should be issued by August 2026.
She said that the SPPU is a commitment to air control set by the DKI Jakarta provincial government for the 2023-2030 period.
The strategy comprises three pillars: strengthening governance of air pollution control, reducing emissions and moving sources such as transportation, and reducing emissions from non-moving sources such as industry and other activities.
SPPU to date has been based on Governor Regulation Kepgub DKI Jakarta Number 576 of 2023. However, its implementation has only reached 50 percent or is not optimal.
This is because the Kepgub does not regulate sanctions. As a result, the public who conduct motor vehicle emission tests tend to fluctuate.
Indeed, emissions testing is said to contribute the most to controlling air pollution.
“Emissions tests will surge when there is a threat of ticketing sanctions. Immediately, public enthusiasm is high,” she said.
Referring to 2025 data, nearly 50 vehicles have been fined for failing emission tests, with fines ranging from Rp700 thousand to Rp16 million.
The Ranpergub will also regulate public participation. According to Erni, the form of public participation has not been detailed so far.
“What form of public participation, who will we involve. This is what we have not included (in the legal umbrella),” Erni said.
