Jakarta Ranks as Second Safest City in ASEAN, Metro Police Chief Continues to Strengthen 'Guard Jakarta' Programme
Jakarta has achieved a remarkable feat by being named the second safest city in Southeast Asia (ASEAN) for 2026, according to the Global Residence Index report. In response, Metro Jaya Police Chief Irjen Asep Edi Suheri has affirmed his commitment to further strengthening the flagship ‘Jaga Jakarta untuk Indonesia’ programme.
In the report, Jakarta holds the second position with a security score of 0.72. This ranking places Jakarta above other major cities such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Manila, and only one level below Singapore.
“This achievement is the tangible result of our collective commitment. However, this accolade must not make us complacent. On the contrary, it serves as motivation to further strengthen the ‘Jaga Jakarta’ programme to ensure this security stability is continuously maintained and sustainable,” said Irjen Asep in Jakarta on Tuesday (7/4/2026).
Following up on this, Irjen Asep has once again issued instructions to all ranks from Polres to Polsek. He emphasised that security measures must not be static but dynamic through cross-sectoral collaboration with the DKI Provincial Government, TNI, and all other stakeholders, as well as with all elements of society.
“I instruct all ranks not to become complacent too quickly. Strengthen synergy with all elements of society. The security we have achieved today must be maintained through closer, more measurable, and better coordinated collaboration on the ground,” stressed Irjen Asep.
This two-star general also urged his subordinates to act as driving forces in facilitating communication among citizens to nip potential conflicts in the bud.
“Ensure every personnel operates on the same frequency and under unified command. Synergy with mass organisations, security partners, and community leaders must be enhanced. We must be present among the people not only to secure but to ensure that sense of safety is truly felt down to the RT and RW levels,” he added.
Irjen Asep explained that Jakarta’s high security score is also rooted in massive support from all elements of society. This commitment is reflected in the Kamtibmas Declaration held recently. The declaration points include:
One, together with Polri, firmly rejecting all forms of anarchic actions, destruction, and societal disturbances.
Two, supporting Polri’s firm actions to create a safe, orderly, and conducive situation.
Three, ready to report all forms of threats and anarchic actions, destruction, and societal disturbances.
Four, ready to support the President’s programmes to improve the national economy and public welfare.
Five, ready together to guard the environment, guard citizens, guard rules, and guard mandates in guarding the capital city of Jakarta for Indonesia.
The Metro Jaya Police Chief reminded that consistency is the main challenge in maintaining the safest city accolade. Through the ‘Jaga Jakarta’ programme, he urged all parties to uphold ethics in both public and digital spaces.
“Jakarta’s strength lies not only in its buildings but in its orderly and caring citizens. Let us maintain ethics in public and digital spaces. Filter information before sharing to avoid sparking provocation,” he explained.
Irjen Asep emphasised that Jakarta’s stability is a top priority for national interests. This aligns with the directives of President Prabowo Subianto, who always stresses the importance of stability. Therefore, he invited everyone to remain solid and cooperate in creating security and comfort for the community.
“Let us maintain this momentum. Jakarta is the face of the nation. By safeguarding our region from various potential threats, we ensure Jakarta remains stable, safe, and orderly for Indonesia,” concluded Irjen Asep.
