Jakarta Provincial Government to Introduce Immersive Technology in Museums Gradually
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government is introducing immersive technology in stages at the museums under its management, including the Textile Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics.
“The Textile Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics will adopt it gradually, taking into account the characteristics of their collections, visitor needs, infrastructure readiness and budget availability,” Sri Kusumawati, head of the Fine Arts Museum Management Unit at the Jakarta Culture Department, said in Jakarta on Friday.
She said immersive technology had so far been introduced only at the Puppet Museum, which is also managed by the department’s Fine Arts Museum Management Unit.
At the Puppet Museum, immersive technology is used to create visual and audio-visual experiences, allowing visitors to enjoy performances and learn about puppet stories and characters through a more modern and engaging approach.
Meanwhile, the Textile Museum has begun developing digital technology, including interactive games, as an educational medium for visitors.
“The main difference [between the immersive technology used at each museum] lies in the approach to the visitor experience,” Sri said.
She said immersive technology focused more on audio-visual experiences that create the impression of being inside a story, while interactive games prioritised visitors’ direct engagement through digital activities.
On technical details, including projection angles, visual coverage and levels of interactivity, she said further confirmation was needed on the specifications of the equipment being used.
“In principle, we see digital technology as a means of supporting improvements to the quality of services and the museum-visiting experience,” Sri said.
She stressed that technology was not intended to replace original collections, but to enrich how information is presented, make museums more appealing and make learning about history, art and culture more enjoyable, particularly for younger generations.
