Jakarta Provincial Government to Halt Aid Funds for Free Private Schools If They Continue Charging Fees
The Jakarta Education Office (Disdik) will impose firm sanctions on free private schools if they continue to collect fees from students and parents. This is because Governor’s Regulation No. 34 of 2025, Article 20, clearly states that private educational units receiving education funding from the Jakarta Provincial Government are prohibited from collecting any fees from students. Head of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Education Office, Nahdiana, stated that if any free private schools violate this by imposing fees, they will receive sanctions in accordance with Governor’s Regulation No. 34, Article 21, of 2025. That article explains that private educational units violating the regulation by collecting fees and failing to return education funding to the Jakarta Provincial Government will face rejection of their subsequent aid proposals. Additionally, a special inspection will be conducted by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Inspectorate. “(There will be) integrated supervision involving relevant cross-agencies,” she said. Previously reported, DPRD DKI Jakarta member Justin Adrian Untayana revealed that his side has received many complaints from the public that free schools are still imposing additional fees on students and parents. “We have discussed this in the Commission E meeting with the Education Office. I conveyed many public complaints regarding these behind-the-scenes fees,” Justin said when contacted by Kompas.com on Friday (8/5/2026). As a result of that meeting, Disdik Jakarta will issue warnings to those private schools and evaluate their partnerships with the Jakarta Provincial Government. Kompas.com has attempted to inquire about which schools are imposing fees and the amounts, but Nahdiana has not yet responded.
