Jakarta Provincial Government Targets Halting Waste Disposal to Bantargebang Starting 2027
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) targets stopping the disposal of waste to Bantargebang in Bekasi, West Java, within one year from the past. “Starting 1 August 2026, the Bantargebang TPST will only receive residual waste. In fact, by 2027, the Bantargebang TPST is targeted not to receive any waste,” said the Head of the Environmental Agency (DLH) of DKI Jakarta, Dudi Gardesi, in a written statement on Saturday (9/8/2026). Therefore, Pemprov Jakarta is intensifying the household waste sorting programme, which will be declared for the first time at the Car Free Day (CFD) event on Jalan H.R Rasuna Said, Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Sunday (10/6/2026). This is because the majority of waste generation comes from households, with nearly half being organic, while the rest still has recycling potential. With sorting at the source, the waste processing will be much easier. The sorting process can resolve the waste issue upstream, by processing organic waste into fertiliser and so on, while inorganic waste will be recycled. Thus, such waste no longer needs to be transported to Bantargebang, which has exceeded its capacity.
