The Jakarta Provincial Government fully respects the ongoing legal process related to the designation of former Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency (DLH), Asep Kuswanto, as a suspect in the landslide case at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST). Deputy Governor of Jakarta, Rano Karno, stated that the suspect status is a consequence of the examinations that have been conducted. The Jakarta Provincial Government is committed to complying with all applicable legal mechanisms. “We adhere to the law. If it becomes a consequence, it must certainly be carried out,” said Deputy Governor Rano at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday (21/4). He emphasised that the Jakarta Provincial Government supports the best steps in handling this case. All ranks are also ready to follow up on recommendations for improving waste management governance quickly and in accordance with regulations. “The Governor has ordered all ranks to accelerate the completion of recommendations from the Ministry of Environment regarding improvements to the governance of TPST Bantargebang. We are also continuing to educate the public to manage waste at the source,” he explained. Furthermore, the Jakarta Provincial Government is intensifying coordination with the Central Government and all stakeholders, including the implementation of more modern waste management technology. It should be noted that TPST Bantargebang serves not only DKI Jakarta but is regional in nature. This case stems from the landslide incident in landfill zone 4 of TPST Bantargebang, Bekasi, West Java, on Sunday (8/3/2026). The incident resulted in 7 people dead and 6 others injured. Previously, the Ministry of Environment (KLH) through a press statement on Monday (20/4/2026) stated that law enforcement is part of the government’s commitment to ensure that waste management is carried out responsibly, in accordance with legislation, and to protect public safety. The Jakarta Provincial Government conveyed deep condolences for the fatalities and injuries in the incident, and is committed to continuously improving the waste management system to prevent similar occurrences.
