Jakarta Provincial Government Prepares Mandatory Waste Sorting Regulation from Households
Jakarta — Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo announced that a Provincial Regulation (Pergub) or Regional Ordinance (Perda) concerning waste sorting from households will be drafted shortly.
“Because we will socialise this soon and there will be a Pergub or Perda to regulate it so that there is something binding,” Pramono explained when met in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.
According to Pramono, the habit of sorting waste from households must begin to be applied in the capital. Pramono stated that the capacity of the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) is no longer adequate, particularly following a landslide at the site recently.
“For Jakarta residents, whether they like it or not, they must begin to get accustomed to sorting waste. Because first, the limitation of Bantargebang means it is not possible for all waste to be managed as before,” Pramono said.
Beyond waste sorting efforts, Pramono stated that the Jakarta Government, together with Danantara and the central government, will soon decide on three waste-to-energy plants (PLTSa), one of which will be at Bantargebang, as an effort to address the waste issue in the capital.
Previously, Pramono had also posted a socialisation video regarding waste sorting on the official Instagram account of the Jakarta Provincial Government. In the video, Pramono invited all Jakarta residents to participate in the Source Waste Sorting Movement.
Pramono explained that the public must sort waste into four categories. The four categories are: readily degradable waste that can be processed into compost; recyclable waste such as plastic, paper and metal that can be channelled to waste banks; hazardous and toxic waste (B3); and residual waste that cannot be reprocessed.
“I invite all Jakarta residents to make waste sorting a daily habit. I believe that if we move together, we can achieve great change,” Pramono said.
