Jakarta Provincial Government Maps Damaged Armco Culverts to Prevent Road Subsidence

The Jakarta Provincial Government is mapping old armco-style channels, also known as Corrollated Steel Pipes (CSP), that have sustained damage to prevent the recurrence of road subsidence.

“Alhamdulillah, the Water Resources Agency (SDA) has mapped where these armco pipes are located throughout Jakarta. Hopefully, the mapping is complete,” said the Deputy Governor of Jakarta, Rano Karno, while inspecting channel repair sites in Lenteng Agung, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, on Tuesday.

He stated that the authorities, alongside the Jakarta Water Resources Agency, are still conducting an inventory of points where these corrugated steel pipes, which are decades old, are used, including channels located beneath railway tracks.

According to Rano, the channel in the Lenteng Agung area, which caused the recent road subsidence, is connected to the water flow from the University of Indonesia (UI) reservoir and passes under railway lines, necessitating specialised handling if damage occurs.

“In such cases, we cannot simply dig; we would need to use drilling or jacking methods because the channel connects directly to the reservoir,” Rano explained. “Please prepare for this; we must prepare for the difficult reality of what must be done if such issues arise.”

It is reported that the South Jakarta Water Resources Sub-department has completed repairs on the channel that caused the subsidence on Jalan Raya Lenteng Agung, Jagakarsa, allowing traffic on that stretch of road to return to normal. The repairs involved replacing the old armco or Corrugated Steel Pipe (CSP) channels, which had deteriorated due to age, with box culverts deemed stronger and more durable. Meanwhile, the South Jakarta City Government has allocated approximately Rp380 million for the repair of the water channels that collapsed in the Lenteng Agung area.
