Jakarta Provincial Government Involves Cross-Agency Collaboration to Compile 2026 Democracy Index

The Jakarta Provincial Government is involving the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), academics, research institutions, and civil society organisations in the compilation of the 2026 Indonesian Democracy Index (IDI) to produce a transparent assessment. The IDI is a mutually agreed-upon tool used as a parameter for the level of democratic development across all provinces in Indonesia. The resulting data can serve as a strong basis for decision-making, said Tri Kurnia Prihatono, Head of Domestic Politics and Community Organisations at the Jakarta National Unity and Politics Agency (Kesbangpol), on Wednesday. He noted that Jakarta previously recorded the highest IDI score nationally for five consecutive years from 2017 to 2021, with values ranging from 82.08 to 84.73. However, Jakarta’s national ranking has declined from second place in 2023 to fifth in 2024, and eighth in 2025. Despite this, Jakarta’s IDI score remains in the high category and above the national average. Meanwhile, Head of BPS Jakarta Province, Kadarmanto, stated that improving the quality of democracy in Jakarta requires strengthening public information disclosure, reviewing policies related to the expression of opinions in public, and bolstering democracy education for various community groups. He said democracy education needs to reach students, local communities, first-time voters, community organisations, and other groups so they understand their rights, obligations, and roles in democratic life. This aims to ensure every group comprehends their rights, obligations, and roles in democratic life, thereby strengthening the quality of democracy, Kadarmanto explained.
