Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung officially inaugurated a boxing ring arena located under the Pasar Rebo Flyover in East Jakarta on Monday (18/5). This step is part of the Jakarta Provincial Government’s strategy to optimise urban spaces, transforming them into productive areas that benefit residents.

Pramono emphasised that utilising the area beneath the flyover aims to provide a healthy space for community activities. Furthermore, the facility is expected to prevent various negative activities that could disturb local peace.

“The utilisation of the Pasar Rebo Flyover area is an effort to optimise urban space so that it is more beneficial to the community, while simultaneously providing a space for healthy activities and preventing activities that have the potential to disturb environmental peace,” Pramono stated during his speech at the inauguration.

The presence of this sports facility is considered an effective way to channel the energy of young people towards more positive pursuits. Pramono revealed that since the facility began functional use, the rate of street brawls in the surrounding area has shown a significant decrease.

“Hopefully, this provides benefits for the youth in East Jakarta so that their energy is channelled through places like this, making them more productive, reducing street brawls and fights, and hopefully, they can be involved in maintaining Jakarta,” Pramono added.

Echoing the Governor’s sentiments, Sudirman (54), a boxing coach and local resident, expressed high appreciation for the inauguration. He noted that the presence of the boxing ring is very helpful for residents in mitigating potential conflicts between youth groups in the Pasar Rebo area.

“Alhamdulillah, we are very grateful. Street brawls used to happen frequently here. With the presence of this boxing martial arts facility, brawls under the Pasar Rebo flyover and its surroundings have decreased, and we can also train,” said Sudirman.

The boxing arena was constructed through community self-funding and has been in gradual use since January 2026. With this inauguration, the Jakarta Provincial Government hopes that the area under the Pasar Rebo Flyover will no longer be viewed as a slum or a high-crime area, but rather as a centre of achievement for young boxing athletes from East Jakarta.
