Jakarta Provincial Government Guarantees Bicycle Lanes Will Not Be Removed, but Some Will Be Evaluated
The Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub) has guaranteed that bicycle lanes in Jakarta will be maintained. However, a number of lanes are set to undergo evaluation.
“We have discussed the bicycle lanes in a recent meeting, and they will be maintained. Because within the hierarchy of transport, bicycle lanes and pedestrian paths must be prioritised,” said the Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Budi Awaludin, while attending the National Transport Day commemoration in the Monas area, Jakarta, on Tuesday (22/9/2026).
He stated that existing bicycle lanes will not be demolished, though a small number of routes will be evaluated.
“So, these will be maintained, though there are a few that will be evaluated later,” he added.
Previously, the Jakarta Provincial Government was still conducting evaluations regarding the fate of bicycle lanes in Jakarta. The provincial government has been intensifying enforcement on bicycle lanes that are frequently encroached upon by motorised vehicles while awaiting a final decision.
“The evaluation is ongoing. There are lanes occupied by motorcycles, poorly maintained, or disconnected,” said the Special Staff to the Governor of Jakarta, Chico Hakim, to reporters on Thursday (27/8).
“Cycling communities are requesting that they be maintained. The Governor has not yet made a decision and will do so as soon as all input has been weighed,” he continued.
