Jakarta Provincial Government Expresses Condolences Over Death of Firefighter on Duty

The Jakarta Provincial Government has expressed profound condolences following the passing of Andriyono, the Squad Leader of the Cepu Group, Cipayung Sector, while on duty handling a rubbish pile fire on Jalan Penggilingan Baru, Dukuh Village, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta.

“We express our deepest condolences to the deceased’s family and will ensure that all of his rights are fulfilled in accordance with applicable regulations,” stated the Head of the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmable), Bayu Megantara, in Jakarta on Sunday.

Bayu explained that the department received reports of the fire on Saturday morning. A total of 10 fire engines and 50 personnel were immediately deployed to the location. During the operation, the deceased was tasked with locating water sources to support the operation and was not directly at the fire’s ignition point.

“While connecting the hoses, the deceased suddenly complained of chest pain. Colleagues immediately sought medical assistance. He received initial treatment on-site before being evacuated to Harapan Bunda Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:30 PM WIB. The deceased was known to have a history of heart disease,” Bayy disclosed.

Although the main fire had been extinguished, handling continued as the burning material consisted of large piles of rubbish. According to Marulina, embers could still be found in the lower layers despite the surface appearing extinguished.

“The current focus of the operation is the fire located beneath the rubbish piles. While the surface may appear wet, there is still significant smoke, indicating the potential for fire to spread to a depth of approximately one to two metres,” she said.

Marulina added that firefighters have been opening several points within the rubbish piles to allow water to reach the lower layers and extinguish the remaining embers.
